"/his/ - History & Humanities" is 4chan's board for discussing and debating history.

CatalogThreads

0 / 0Welcome to /his/ - History & HumanitiesThis board is dedicated to the discussion of history and the other humanities such as philosophy, religion, law, classical artwork, archeology, anthropology, ancient languages, etc. Please use /lit/ for discussions of literature. Threads should be about specific topics, and the creation of "general" threads is discouraged.

For the purpose of determining what is history, please do not start threads about events taking place less than 25 years ago. Historical discussions should be focused on past events, and not their contemporary consequences. Discussion of modern politics, current events, popular culture, or other non-historical topics should be posted elsewhere. General discussions about international culture should go on /int/.

/his/ is not /pol/, and Global Rule #3 is in effect. Do not try to treat this board as /pol/ with dates. Blatant racism and trolling will not be tolerated, and a high level of discourse is expected. History can be examined from many different conflicting viewpoints; please treat other posters with respect and address the content of their post instead of attacking their character.

When discussing history, please reference credible source material, and provide as much supporting information as possible in your posts.

6 / 1The useless, pleasure-loving Philip III died unexpectedly in 1621. His son became the fourth Philip. Velasquez painted him many times starting at the age of 19 and the last at age 50; we see the King evolve from a boyish teenager to a mature man to a graying and prematurely aged man--he must have loved having his portrait painted to sit down for Velasquez so much. Philip was a generous man, devoted to his children and no aescetic; he enjoyed the pleasures of life and perhaps because he loved having a good time so much Spanish art enjoyed a golden age under his reign. When he felt that he sinned too often, he doubled his prayers and trusted in his good works to earn him eternal salvation. He had 32 children and formally acknowledged eight. Having little time for affairs of state, he left them to the skillful Don Gaspar de Guzman, Count of Olivares.

Olivares and Cardinal Richelieu's careers were near-contemporaneous and the two played a geopolitical chess match with each other for two decades. He is shown by Velasquez, upturned mustachio, robes, bands, chains, and keys of state showing authority. His haughty personality, short temper, and inflexibility offended all but those who knew his devotion to the Spanish state, his scrupulous honesty, his patronage of the arts, and his modest personal life. He worked hard to fight corruption and abuses of various kinds, collect unpaid back taxes, moderating the expenses of the royal household, even curbing the cruelty of the Inquisition. Olivares worked tirelessly from sun up to sun down on all affairs of state.

2 / 0End of WW2On Tuesday April 6th 1943, a memorandum (grossly overexaggerated and very unrealistic in hindsight) analysing the current military situation reached Churchill’s desk at about the same time as it was splashed all over the frontpages of the London-based newspaper the Daily Mail (it was unintentionally leaked by a Ministry of Defence official as it slipped out of his satchel and got left behind on the subway for a journalist to find). Churchill was furious that this had been published despite wartime censorship on the media in place. He cursed Minister of Information Brendan Bracken as his ministry was supposed to prevent unauthorized releases of secret political and military documents, calling the publication the “single greatest blunder in the history of British intelligence.” The article was titled “How Mr. Churchill believes Hitler will win the war” and Churchill later called it the “brilliant piece of suggestive journalism that cost us the war” in his autobiography published in 1948 to prove his case.

They're unique, in that they're completely isolated - they're not close to Sardinia, the Romans, Levantines, even modern Greeks.

Is this who the Minoans were, genetically speaking?

34 / 6What Christianity Was and Will Be Again. The truth is that it is more like the beliefs of the Greeks than the Jews, at least it is supposed to be or was once.

Like how all the blood descended peoples of Heracles conceived of themselves as the living body of their patron god that was their people's father, the Celtic/Irish people had a similar belief regarding themselves being descended from of the Tuath Dé, and the Norse believed themselves to be of Odin in a similar fashion...

So too are Christians said to be the body of their God, except their body is formed from all such people who are of God, so that all that is of God will be joined into one, reunited, and saved from death to rule all of creation.

It was a good plan, it worked for about 1500 years until they stopped excluding people who were never of any god and so had no place in the body of the God of gods.

The resurrection of this God is predestined, and the time approaches.

228 / 50The 5 stages of Nordicism

Obsession and feelings of inferiority
>man, Greco-Romans were so cool and Evropean! I'm going to start reading more about them, maybe even learn classical Greek and Latin and dedicate my entire life to them. I wish my snownigger ancestors did something comparable. Unless, wait a minute...

Falsifying history
>The Greco-Romans were just like me and you descend from slaves. Xanthos means platinum blond. The Ancients were clearly of Nordic stock because they had a structured society. Mediterranean man only likes music and festivities, it was impossible for them to do that.
>t. Madison Grant, Tenney Frank, Hans Gunther, Lothrop Stoddard
>just wait when there is more genetic data, you will see!

Coping with facts and moving the goalposts
>These genetic samples are trash! Those are just the slaves from the Levant! Elites were cremated! Dorian invasion! But wait OH SHIT THIS SINGLE HELLENISTIC ERA MACEDONIAN CLUSTERS WITH NORTHERN ITALIANS!!! Italics cluster with Spaniards (who I thought were brown last week)! Very interesting, isn't it helot!?

Demanding an impossible standard of evidence
>It appears they were not Nordic but they were just their own thing, who went extinct. They had 0.0001 distance from modern South Europe, that is just way too much to say they have any living relatives. These 1,000 samples aren't enough, you can't make any inferences on such a large population with that. We need 6,000,000 samples. I was so optimistic about ancient genetics, but it's clear it won't give anyone real answers unfortunately

Sour grapes and feigning disinterest
>Yeah maybe I spent the past 5 years of my life on Greco-Roman stuff daily and they used to be fundamental to my entire worldview. Who cares about ancient brownoids though you dumb swarthoid wop malaka terronis when Wernher von Braun took our Rasse to the moon? Muh Nobel prizes. But all the Jewish physicists and Nobel prize winners were frauds who stole our research. Goths were better anyways

14 / 0I don't understand why commies harp on about improved living standard metrics under industrializing communist regimes that arose out of backward agrarian nations when improved standards in such scenarios do not seem to be exclusive to communist regimes at all. Wikipedia sources tell me that under the Shah Iran's literacy rate tripled from 27% to 80%, the national income increased by 423 times, the Iranian armed forces became the fifth strongest military in the world, and the population more than doubled. And the Shah did this without killing fucking millions of his own countryman via some Great Leap Forward scheme. Yet commies seem to hate him.
South Korea and Japan vs China are also examples that show communism is harmful to a nation's development if anything. There are few people today who would rather live in China than SK and Japland, which have far, far higher GDPs per capita and standards of living.
>but the US helped them
So then capitalism is better because it allows for capitalist foreign investment and the advantages of having a pro-US foreign policy outweigh those of your supposedly superior economic system? This is just admitting that it's a better idea to not go communist and that it holds countries back.
Really the improved development in certain formerly communist countries seems to just be the effects of modernization and the real effects of communism itself are "modernize long term at the same pace as capitalist countries can at best, but also terrorize and kill millions of your citizens in the process."
Am I wrong?

73 / 5Traditional Catholicism Condemns Textual CriticismSaint Pope Pius X in his Oath Against Modernism condemns Biblical textual criticism, the foundation of modern Biblical translation. See bellow:
> Likewise, I reject that method of judging and interpreting Sacred Scripture which, departing from the tradition of the Church, the analogy of faith, and the norms of the Apostolic See, embraces the misrepresentations of the rationalists and with no prudence or restraint adopts textual criticism as the one and supreme norm.

1 / 0So is Hell really forever? If I died without repenting and went to hell, then Can’t I just go to heaven just by repenting in hell?

3 / 0Historical Methods?I got a new interest in the study of the philosophy of history as well as just reading more detailed books on historical events. Not historical narratives but books discussing methods and approaches to how historians conclude or evaluate that a certain event in history occurred. Not gonna lie, I was really curious at first and came in with the impression that historians had this detailed bullet proof or at least beyond a reasonable dount in confirming historical events.

But upon reading books on phil of his, historical Jesus research and some other stuff I realised that the entire field of ancient history is bs conjecture. It's all based on some flimsy evidence and then constructing grand narratives to explain it based on capricious standards of authenticity. It feels like trying to piece together a 5000+ piece jigsaw puzzle when you only have 5 pieces at best and they've all been chewed and bitten.

Not to sound like a seethe but I kinda changed my attitude about history. It doesn't seem like history is even about knowing what happened in the past but about finding the more proximate guess about what likely happened in the past. Like, when I used to hear the claim that 99% of scholars believe Jesus existed, which I still do hold to, and he died on a cross they were using a completely different standard of evidence and certainty that most people use. I kinda get why when some normie Christians first start to study Christianity to better defend their faith they lose hope since they realise that the evidence doesn't match their expectations.

Anyways, books for this feel?

9 / 0African ColonizationThe colonization of Africa is often regarded as a "terrible thing" that should have "never occured", but is that really true? Africa was a wasteland before Europeans set foot in the continent and still continues to be a wasteland without the white man's presence. The European nations transformed the African wasteland into what could have been possibly Wakanda if they had stayed for longer.
In the end, the true tragedy was decolonization.

0 / 0How much did everyday people believe in an interplanetary or even interstellar future in the 50's and 60's? How pervasive were such speculations in education and media?
1747288037331582.jpg
11 / 160 Years Since Decolonization what do we make of it?60 Years after the decolonization of Africa the continent seems to have reverted to its historical norm. The north is largerly governed by fairly organized modern states, and the south is largely dominated by disorganized stochastic warfare, now in the modern age taking the form of civil war, inflationary currencies, transatory governments, and political assassinations taking the place of the spear chucking and tribal cheif murdering of old.
Yet is not the modern state of Africa l wish to dwell on (obviously as this is a history board) or its ancient parallel but of the relatively breif period of extensive european colonization of Africa mainly between 1860 and 1960.
100 years give or take a decade that's all it lasted.
The only time the whole of the continent of Africa ever in its history had running watter, electrical infrastructure, maintained roads and widely available programs modern programs for education and even medical treatment. lt lasted a century and then it was gone; seemingly never to return in the years to come.
What do you think historians of the future will make of this period in African history?
Will the modern understanding of it as an oppressive and exploitative time of extractive destructive empire persist or will some new understanding be come to??
Will it be viewed in the future as a golden age for Africa squandered by the natives (or perhaps by the colonizers) for poor thought out moral justifications whose basis did not stand the test of time???
Will there be some other understanding of the period viewing it as a partial folly and partial success which was noble in some ways and ignoble in others?
ln any case: what will the history books say?
How will we look back on the legacy of colonial and post colonial africa come 2060??

12 / 0the christian god and the female orgasmthe vulva is an excellent argument for intelligent design
it doesn't make sense, evolutionarily. the sexually sensitive part (clit) is located above the vagina itself so that it is not stimulated by penetration in 90% of women. sexual pleasure is supposed to be an incentive to reproduce, but because of the clitoris' location, in sex that is just for reproduction the women doesn't orgasm. an evolutionarily advantageous adaptation would be to put the clit at the cervix or near it so that sex with the highest probability of fertilization feels the best, but it isn't. all of this in mind, the only thing that makes sense is that god deliberately designed the vulva to not yield pleasure and to be suboptimal, because, as is stated numerous times in the bible, god doesn't like women.

43 / 7The Fall Of The Roman EmpireI often see a few things blamed for the fall of the Roman Empire.

> The Crisis of the Third Century, which weakened the empire through constant political instability and military pressure.
> The invasions of various barbarian groups, which gradually chipped away at the empire's borders and internal unity.
> The rise of Christianity, which some argue shifted focus away from Roman traditions and undermined imperial authority.

But at what point exactly was the Roman Empire beyond saving? Was there an event or series of events that made its fall inevitable? Or did Rome simply reach a tipping point where even the best efforts couldn't prevent the collapse?

12 / 0Jesus was created by the Roman-Jewish elite to give the Pharisees (poor Jews) and their sympathizers a peaceful and resigned pro-Roman messiah, justify the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem, and then create a religion that would make the poor, servants and slaves accept their situation of misery and exploitation in exchange for a place in the Haven.
Much of the Christian narrative was written by members of the imperial elite who lied about their identities, names, and facts, as they controlled the writing and circulation of papyri.

Jesus was created AFTER the war of 70. And it didn't work because the Jews didn't accept the pro-roman messiah bullshit.

That's why they kept revolting until the final massacre in 135. "Christianity" died and was resurrected by the elite after the Crisis of the Third Century to continue what Aurelian had begun when he placed the god Sol as the chief Roman deity on December 25, 274. Christianity merely added the question of the poor accepting their suffering in exchange for the Heaven. Of course, a part of the elite did not accept this very well, placing a suffering Jew as the main God of Rome, but Theodosius and his son Flavius Honorius (Saint Augustine) won the fight

>Turn the other cheek (don’t join Jewish Zealot resistance to Rome)

84 / 10God says "I am the LORD" 154 times in the old testament. It is the way he speaks. A pattern you can recognize in every book of the old testament. God says this every time he speaks. He says something and ends his sentence with I am the LORD.

In every book that is how he speaks. But Jesus does not speak like this. He never says I am the LORD at the end of his sentences. He doesn't even say I am Jesus. He just doesn't speak like this. He does not possess the speech pattern that God exhibits all through the old testament that would indicate that he was God incarnate.

God has a very distinct way of speaking and Jesus does not speak like him. Jesus speaks like a regular person.

19 / 0I think angels made up God like we make up Santa ClausMy new theory on God is that aliens and extradimensionals, especially extremely benevolent powerful beings like angels, archangels, etc, plus Jesus, carried out what Plato calls the "noble lie". Just like we tell children about Santa, these beings are telling us about God, because we're intellectually immature and we want to believe in this sort of thing. When we grow up, we will realize God doesn't exist like a child learns Santa doesn't exist and it will be a little disappointing at first for most people but they will get over it. For the super smart people, however, there will be the peace that comes from finally knowing something with certainty, whereas before, when one is at the believing stage, our minds were chaotic and confused because this claim didn't/doesn't make any sense/is logically incoherent. All minds are one mind? Then is that mind part of a community of bigger minds? God created reality? Then did God create God? If he wasn't there to create himself, how did he create himself? Why are we choosing that he is male over female—are men better than women? Why do women exist, then? Why not more sexes—why only one more? Why does God care if you do gay things or masturbate? Why is this child dying of cancer when this psychopath is making millions manipulating the stock market? Why do nice guys finish last while genghis khan who murdered 10-40 million people had thousands of children? Why do some Buddhists attain the rainbow body while rejecting the idea of a God? Where the fuck is he, anyway?? All these questions have no answers because God doesn't exist. Angels and aliens are all lying to us because we're still children who are not ready to take responsibility for our own eternal future. Existentialism is correct—we are doomed to freedom. The only thing we are stuck with for all of eternity is not God, but ourselves. We are the most important thing/top priority in our reality.

35 / 8Point of No Return for the USSR?I typically see three events and/or people blamed for the dissolution of the USSR.

>Brezhnev, whose policies gradually saw the USSR fall behind the west and lead to an "Era of Stagnation"
>Soviet-Afghan War, which humiliated the Soviet Army on the international and domestic stages
>Gorbachev, whose liberalization policies removed what few methods of control the state had over the populace, leading to an uncontrollable tailspin

But at what point exactly was the Soviet Union beyond saving? Was there an event or series of events that meant that the only way forward was dissolution of the Soviet Union? Did we even really get there, or did Gorbachev jump the gun when there could've still been another way out?

I don't think any of these commonly cited events were that point of no return.

18 / 0Proofs of Godhttps://benthams.substack.com/p/arguments-for-god-tier-list?utm_source=publication-search
This is a hard one to get your head around. However, once you do, you come to see that it’s absolutely devastating I’ll probably have an article laying this argument out in more detail sometime soon. There are plenty of helpful resources for getting the argument. There’s a law of nature that everyone who finds the argument persuasive gets so irritated by people misunderstanding it that they write a brief explainer on it. My friend Amos has a several-part series on it; my other friend Apologetics Squared has an incredible series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKgGxUJTnqfvdlzN7txeHaup-BJTju-gH on YouTube of 38 very short videos, roughly 1 minute in length, explaining and defending the argument, as well as a pretty short and comprehensive video on it; Dustin Crummett and Brian Cutter have a paper on the argument https://philarchive.org/archive/CUTPHA#:~:text=Roughly%2C%20psychophysical%20harmony%20consists%20in,another%20in%20strikingly%20fortunate%20ways. ; and I have an article on it.

In short, the argument proceeds by noting that there’s a kind of harmony between the mental and the physical. Your internal map of reality roughly matches reality as it is—when you see a four-foot table in front of you, there really is a four-foot table. Similarly, there’s a kind of harmony between our desires and the actions we take. When you want to move your limbs, your limbs move.

Now, while this seems ordinary enough, in reality, it is very surprising. Think about all the ways the mental and the physical could pair. Most of them wouldn’t produce any interesting harmony—most of them would produce random mental static, rather than anything interesting. It would be much simpler for every brain to have the experience of seeing a red wall, or a yellow one, or a green one, than for them to have the complex experiences that they actually have.

3 / 0Jesus Was InvestigatedHave you heard about how two governments at the time of Christ looked into him and his activities, and the heads of state of both came away believing that he genuinely had divine power?

The Roman Emperor Tiberius because of the reports he received from his officials, and same for the king of Osroene. Except in the king of Osroene's case he was then the object of one of those miracles when an Apostle came and healed him!

All of this we have reported in official documents from government archives. The historians Eusebius (at http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/250101.htm) and Movses Khorenatsi (at http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0859.htm) record how the king of Armenia, Abgar, requested a healing from Christ and one of the Apostles came and did so. The official archives in the capital city Edessa recorded this, and recorded King Abgar's letters discussing the events. They transcribed them straight from the archives and he talked about being healed.

Armenia is the oldest Christian nation today because its king at the time of Christ was healed by an Apostle.

One of them was to Emperor Tiberius, and as you can read there he isn't shocked at any of this, instead he says "we had already heard several persons relate these facts, Pilate has officially informed us of the miracles of Jesus".

86 / 4>I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. - Isaiah 45:7 (KJV)

Even if we accept “evil” means “calamity,” your God is still claiming to cause disasters. That’s not passive allowance, it’s active infliction.

Calamity is suffering. Whether it’s war, famine, disease, or death, calamity isn’t neutral, it involves pain, destruction, and often the loss of innocent life. God is claimed to be all-powerful and all-knowing. So He:
>Knows the suffering will happen
>Has the power to stop or prevent it
>Chooses to cause or permit it anyway

That is, by human moral standards, malevolent. If a human ruler acted this way, causing mass destruction with full knowledge and capability to stop it, we’d rightly label him a monster.

Why didn't romans know about them? They were completely absent from their imaginary. Even before Aeneas myth, romans thought they descended from Mars or Janus.

Therefore, we conclude that the Yamnaya were not really the steppe source for Anatolia and the Indo-Anatolian hypothesis is at least logical, and steppe burials in Bulgaria are not rare in fact. There were many migrations along the Black Sea coastal region, starting from Suvorovo (before 4000 BC) and perhaps Suvorovo is connected to the Proto-Hittites.

31 / 4"GoD wOrKs In MyStErIoUs WaYs"Saying “God has a purpose, but we just can’t understand it” is a rhetorical dead end. It avoids engaging with the moral horror of the situation, like a child being born to suffer and die, by invoking a cosmic mystery that cannot be examined, questioned, or falsified. That’s not reasoning, it’s abdication.

If someone tells you:
>There is a reason for this unimaginable cruelty, but it’s beyond your comprehension,
what they’re really saying is:
>“I have no rational explanation, but I need to preserve my belief — so I’m invoking mystery as a shield.”

It’s a theological escape hatch, not a resolution. And more often than not, it exists to protect emotional investment in a system that can’t stand up to moral scrutiny. If a belief requires you to reinterpret evil as good, or to redefine justice as mystery, you’re no longer describing morality, you’re describing submission.

Baroque thread? Anything from the period goes, hell anything that captures the spirit.

There's an argument I read from Alejo Carpentier that maintains that Baroque is, more than an art movement relegated to a particular period, the natural culmination of a dialectic of traditions and so it manifested not just in the XVII century European tradition, but also in the Hellenistic Period, the imperial decadence of Rome and so on and so on.

lets say you were in a burning building with two other people

you knew that if you saved one of them you would both escape safely.

but you also knew that if you tried to save both, there would be a 50% chance that all 3 die, but also a 50% chance that all 3 people lived.

would you try to go for both, or just save the one? imagine they wre people you really care about. for hard mode, make it 3 or more other people, and if you try to save any more than 1 of them the 50/50 applies.
